I had always heard that T-18s were slightly better than T-98s due to better bearing design.  Boy was I surprised when I compared the above gears.  The gears on the left are from the T-18, and the gears on the right are from the T-98.  The T-98 uses rollers on second gear and and a bronze bushing on third gear, while the T-18 used plain old polished steel.  I decided to use the T-98 gears, but was only able to use second.  Third gear wouldn't fit on the T18 shaft so I was forced to used the T-18 gear.  The other difference between the two trannys was in first gear.  The tooth count was different on first gear as well as the cluster gear and the reverse idler gear.  So for those of you keeping score, I ended up using a T-18 input shaft, output shaft, and third gear, and the rest of the parts from the T-98 including the case.
